The disorder in Italy permitted the Fascisti to mount military-scale attacks on socialist municipal governments. I see no signs of anything similar in opposition to Mamdani. There is no right wing paramilitary that could invade Manhattan with impunity. It looks more like he is being left alone almost as a laboratory experiment.

Which leads to 2, can municipal socialism deliver the basic goods needed by city residents to secure its popular base? Mamdani can probably get the garbage emptied and the snow plowed, but can he impose public safety without alienating his progressive core supporters?

The world will be watching with interest.

“no President can dissolve a city council or remove a Mayor” but in Michigan we lived under Emergency Financial protection Management, declared by the Republican Governor. At one point the majority of Michigan’s Black residents were under EFM. We called them E-MF’s. They had the power to supersede city councils and mayors in all spending/ fiscal decisions…. Our current “Democratic” mayor Duggan- king of privatization and gentrification is running for Governor as an “independent “, many of us think to cozy closer to the Currebt administration.

Mind you when I say privatization and gentrification, I don’t only mean racial displacement, I mean handing over tens of millions of public dollars to developers and billionaires. I also mean increasing state police jurisdiction inside the city because local cops are too close to city residents.
